Austin's Hottest Tech Companies Are Hiring. Here's How I Help Their Families Call Austin Home

Cynthia Mattiza October 27, 2026

It's Austin Tech Week, and the city's startup scene just handed out its report card. This year's Austin Business Journal's Fire Awards drew over 100 nominations, narrowed to 40-plus honorees, with one Blazer winner named in each category.

The winners tell a clear story. Austin is building defense tech, nuclear energy, humanoid robots, and AI here, not just opening sales offices. These companies are recruiting nationally, and the people they hire are bringing their families.

I'm Cynthia Mattiza, Associate Broker with Kuper Sotheby's International Realty. For 16 years I've helped families relocate to Austin. When a tech family calls me, they ask the same three things: Where are the good schools? How bad is the commute? Where will we actually fit in? This post answers all three.

Every one of these companies is hiring engineers, operators, and leaders. Many of those hires are moving here from the coasts with kids in tow.

Schools: where most relocation searches start

For families, the school district usually decides the neighborhood. On the west side, two districts come up in almost every relocation conversation I have.

District

Areas served

Why families ask about it

Eanes ISD

West Lake Hills, Rollingwood, parts of Barton Creek

Close to downtown and MoPac, established neighborhoods

Lake Travis ISD

Bee Cave, Lakeway, Spanish Oaks, Lake Travis

Newer campuses, growing communities, lake lifestyle

Austin ISD

Central neighborhoods like Tarrytown, Allandale, Rosedale, NW Hills

Close-in living near many tech offices in the Domain

Austin also has strong private school options across the west side and central city.

My advice: check current ratings on the Texas Education Agency site, then tour campuses in person. School boundaries can split a single neighborhood, so I confirm the assigned schools for every home before you make an offer.

Commutes: the hybrid advantage

Austin's tech employers are spread across Central Austin, the Domain in North Austin, East Austin, and beyond. From the west side, MoPac, Loop 360, and Highway 71 are your main routes in.

Here's what changed the game: hybrid work. Most of my tech clients go into the office two or three days a week. That opens up neighborhoods that would have felt too far five years ago.

Area

Approx. drive to Central Austin

The trade-off

Tarrytown / Allandale

10-15 min

Shortest drive, smaller lots, higher price per foot

Westlake Hills

15-25 min

Close in with Hill Country views

Barton Creek

20-30 min

Gated, golf, still quick to downtown

Bee Cave / Spanish Oaks

30-45 min

Newer homes, more space, Lake Travis ISD

Lakeway / Lake Travis

40-55 min

Lake living, the most home for your money

Drive times swing with traffic and depend on where your office is. Before you commit, drive the route at the hour you'd actually go in. I'll ride along.

Communities: finding where you fit

Schools and commutes narrow the map. Community is what makes a place feel like home.

  • Tarrytown: close-in and tree-lined, near Lake Austin and Mayfield Park
  • Northwest Hills: hilly, established streets with quick access to MoPac, Loop 360, and the Domain
  • Zilker: walk to Zilker Park and Barton Springs, minutes from downtown
  • Barton Hills: quiet streets backing up to the Barton Creek Greenbelt, a short drive to downtown
  • Westlake Hills: established, close to everything, a strong neighborhood identity
  • Barton Creek: guard-gated, golf and country club living, minutes from downtown
  • Spanish Oaks: guard-gated Hill Country setting in Bee Cave, with an active social calendar
  • Lakeway and Lake Travis: boating, trails, and a slower weekend pace

I live in Spanish Oaks. I moved my family from South Austin's 78704 to West Austin about six years ago, and it's one of the best decisions I've made for us. I've never looked back. So when I tell you what it's like to live out here, I'm telling you from my own kitchen table.

How I help tech families relocate

Relocating from out of state means making big decisions from far away. Here's how I make it easier.

  1. A strategy call before you visit. We talk through schools, your office location, budget, and lifestyle. You arrive with a short list, not a long one.
  2. A custom tour built around your commute. I map neighborhoods to your actual drive and show you homes in a single, efficient trip.
  3. Eyes on the ground when you can't be here. Live video walkthroughs and honest feedback on every home.
  4. A builder's eye. My background in interior design and custom home construction means I spot what a house really needs before you buy it.
  5. Help after the move. My new-to-the-community welcome guide covers local favorites, services, and things to do so you settle in fast.

I'm RealTrends Verified (top 1.5% of agents nationally), a Platinum Top 50 REALTOR® every year since 2012, and an Austin Business Journal Top Producing Agent every year since 2014. Nominated for Inman's Most Innovative Agent in 2026.
